Aluminum Reitnouer Trailers For Fuel Economy And Low Maintenance

In 1982, a 25-year-old Bud Reitnouer became convinced that he could come up with an improved flatbed trailer design, and he was right. Today, Reitnouer Trailer, based in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania, is one of the leading manufacturers of fully bolted, all-aluminum flatbeds and drop decks in North America. In fact, it has over 50 percent of the market in aluminum trailers. Approximately one in six newly manufactured flatbeds has the Reitnouer name on it.

Fully Bolted Design

In the early eighties, the standard trailer was either a welded steel or steel-aluminum combination. Reitnouer believed that a non-welded aluminum trailer design would take on established competitors. The company was so successful that it was built completely upon word-of-mouth referrals for almost two decades. Most early customers were owner-operators, although Reitnouer's innovative designs eventually attracted fleet interest. Today, larger national fleets account for about half of sales.

Fuel-efficient, Low-maintenance Trailers

Today, Reitnouer flatbeds and drop decks offer coveted fuel efficiency combined with minimal maintenance requirements. Aluminum designs do not chip, rust or require painting.

Reitnouer estimates aluminum's overall market share has increased from about one in eight trailers to one in four. Given the continued importance of fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs, aluminum flatbeds are poised to capture even more of the market in the future.
