An Overview Of The Semi Tire Repair Process

When a passenger vehicle is suffering from a flat or leaky tire, the standard fix is simply to find and fill the hole with a rubber plug. Yet this approach simply isn’t hardy enough to provide lasting results for a semi truck tire. If you would like to learn more about what it takes to successfully repair a semi tire, read on. Plug Filling 

The first step in preparing a semi tire for further service is to remove the object that has penetrated it. Then the damaged area is filled using one of two things: a pliable filling material, or a cured plug. Whichever of these is used, once in place it is covered with a special vulcanizing repair material. The purpose of this measure is to prevent moisture from penetrating the puncture. This can lead to the premature degradation of both the tire’s casing, and the eventual puncture repair. 

Casing Patch 

As noted above, a plug should never be considered a permanent fix for a punctured tire. That’s because such a plug does nothing to restore the casing’s structural integrity. To do that, it is necessary to open the tire up using a spreader. Then the area around the damage is carefully cleaned and buffed to ensure that the patching cement can bond fully. The rubber cement is then applied, an appropriately sized patch is pressed into place, and the patch itself is buffed to ensure a strong a bond as possible.
